Should one lock away your treasured diamond, or should one have it on display to share with the world.

Such is the annual Sabie Valley Rider Academy's yearly Sand Riding event hosted for the few years in the Kosi Bay area that needs to be shared with the greater adventure rider community.

This was the second time that I entered, as I, and I guess, many more adventure bikers, have this fear of riding in sand with our adventure bikes. My expectation has not been to become an overnight sand riding god, but to learn and hone the basic principles / skills to actually enjoying a sandy challenge when faced with such.

Thomas and Jacqui Bohm were once again exceeding expectations, from the event registration, accommodation, meals, snacks and refreshments throughout the weekend, along with great assistance from the Heyl brothers, Stephan and Lohan and James Jenkins assisting with the coaching, and most important on such an event, the medical support of Bertus and Marietha Prinsloo (Outdoor Medical). Special note and thanks to James who transported a tractor down especially to plough the field on which we spend hours training at.

This year's group consisted of the following participants, a number of which belonging to our Club. Eugene Fourie (who spent a disproportionate time picking up bikes - everyone else's!), Colin Gallop, John Dayson, Gerhard Mattheus, Boris Kamstra, Philip Duddy, Muriel (Mier) Simpson, Paul Swart, Martin and Gary.

Our base was Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp, where Ken, as an avid biker, made us all feel at home. The road up to the lodge is sedan friendly, if ever you may want to consider staying over in that part of our beautiful country. Situated right next to the entrance to Kosi Bay Reserve.

***The photo's I'm posting are from the collection we shared, mostly originating from Stephan Heyl who took his drone along to capture some awesome footage for us.

We all had to be there by 14H00 on Thursday, 8 June.

Philip Duddy and I made it in good time, arriving there before 13:00, with some spare time to unpack and fill the hydro packs with cold water.

The group assembled for a quick overview of the panned events for the day, along with a quick practice session to get one's feet on the pegs from stand-still - basic technique that forms an important aspect when riding in sand.

Some time was spent on the newly ploughed field, followed with an outride on a sandy "2 spoor" to where we could view a few hippos in the lake.

The Friday morning saw us heading out for some more training on the freshly ploughed field, before we headed out to go and explore the Kosi Bay area where sandy roads are not in short supply!

The route took us right up to the lake, riding though an impressive jungle where Tarzan and Jane would feel right at home. No time to look around as one's focus need to be on the spoor one has to follow.

We stopped on a ridge with an impressive view over the lake. Stephan took his drone out to capture some amazing footage of the lake, especially the fish-traps being used by the locals, brought along through many generations, ensuring sustainable fishing for generations to come. Thomas arranged with Ken to take us down to the lake and to give the opportunity for those interested to go on a fish-spearing excursion.

Saturday was the day to go and use the experience gained over the previous two days, by an outride into Mozambique to Ponta D'Ouro for a quick swim in the Indian Ocean, along with a seafood lunch, and some indigenous liquid refreshments (2M, Laurentina, Rum & Raspberry).

On the way back out of "town", everyone stopped and queued for an ice cream from one of the street vendors.

The evening was rounded of with certificate hand-out ceremony, along with a few nominated "straf-doppe" which was cheered by all.

All in all a very enjoyable and memorable weekend.

Lots of sweat along the way, but with my confidence with sand riding increased exponentially from a year ago.

Made new friends and had many good laughs throughout the weekend.

Thank You to Sabie Valley Rider Academy - Thomas and Jacqui, the assistant coaches Lohan, Stephan and James, Eugene and Gary for picking up our bikes so many times, Muriel (Mier) who stood the ground for the female riders, and to the whole group who came along this year - this is what lasting memories are made of.

Bring on Sand X 2018
